Travel safety tips when travelling with dogs in a car

Summer is here and we are allowed to make trips locally and abroad again. It may be an ideal time to take a day trip or a car trip with your dog. Before you leave, it is best to read our tips on how to keep humans and animals safe when travelling by car.

Safety on the road

Taking your dog unharnessed in your car can be life-threatening. When you have to brake or turn abruptly, your pet can turn into a flying projectile. Not only can this be fatal for your dog, but it can also cause permanent damage to you and your car. Although there is no specific legislation in Belgium on how to harness your pet, it is recommended that you place your dog in the back seat with an appropriate safety harness or place him in a cage in the trunk.

Long car rides

During a long drive, you and your dog should take a break every two hours. Stretch your legs, go to the toilet, drink some fresh water - everyone will enjoy a regular break. During the drive, keep the windows closed and don't point the air conditioning at your dog. This will prevent him from catching an eye or ear inflammation.

Safety at your destination

Never leave your dog alone in your car! In warmer weather, the temperature in the car can quickly rises above 30°, which will cause your dog to overheat. This is even if your car is in the shade and you leave a window open. Overheating will cause your dog to have breathing difficulties and may also damage its heart, intestines, liver, kidneys and brain. Do not take any risks and take your dog with you when you park your car.
