Driving safely on icy roads

The winter has officially begun, and that means that we have to prepare ourselves for cold days and icy roads. We’re happy to share some tips so you can stay safe on a slippery road.

  1. Adjust your speed so that you can better anticipate what is happening around you. Secondly, your braking distance is a lot greater on an icy road compared to a dry one. By reducing your speed, you can prevent ending up against the rear bumper of the car in front of you.
  2. For those same reasons, it is advised to keep sufficient distance between you and the car in front.
  3. Have to make an emergency stop? Most recent cars are equipped with an ABS system, which makes sure that you can keep your grip on the road. It is however very important not to pump the brakes, but to press on the brake and clutch pedals firmly. That way, the wheels keep spinning and you’ll get a chance to keep the car safely on the road.
  4. Need to get going from a standstill on a snow-covered road? Slowly let off the clutch and give a controlled amount of gas. By giving too much gas too quickly, you’ll only start slipping.
