Flemish bonus when purchasing an electric car

1 min. read

You have probably heard about it already: the Flemish government is keen to encourage electric mobility and has put several million euros aside for this purpose. With this money the Flemish government aims to pay a bonus to private individuals, non-profit organisations and car-share providers who order a 100% electric car after 25 September 2023. In this way, the Flemish government wants to lower the financial threshold when buying an electric car.

Bonus amount

The bonus in 2024 totals €5,000 for a new car and €3,000 for a second-hand car. In subsequent years, the bonus for new cars will be reduced by €1,000 a year and the bonus for second-hand cars by €500 a year.

Terms and conditions for receiving the bonus

  • The bonus applies to all zero-emission cars, which means entirely electric cars and cars with fuel cells. Plug-in hybrids do not qualify for the bonus.
  • The car may cost a maximum of €40,000 incl. VAT.
  • The bonus applies to both new and second-hand cars. A second-hand car needs to have been registered with its previous owner for at least 3 years and its first registration must be no more than 8 years ago.
  • Private individuals, non-profit organisations and shared mobility providers are eligible to request the bonus.
  • The car must be ordered after 25 September 2023 and delivered after 1 January 2024.
  • The car may not be leased under a private arrangement. At Cardoen, however, you can buy the zero-emission car with a Cardoen Lease, since this is a financing method and not a leasing contract.
  • You may only request the bonus if you live in Flanders.

Procedure for requesting the bonus

  • The person in whose name the car is registered does the registration.
  • You register the car via the e-desk no later than within 90 days of signing the vehicle sale agreement. Cars ordered before 20 February 2024 (the date of publication of the regulations in the Belgian Official Gazette) and after 25 September 2023 can be registered until 20 May 2024 (90 days after publication).
  • Through the e-desk, provide your contact details, the account number on which the premium will be paid and all necessary details about the car along with a digital version of the sales agreement proving compliance with the conditions, showing the make, type, date of the sales agreement and purchase price of the car.
