Planning a car trip to France, Italy or Spain? Don't forget to take these!

Summer has really started and for many Belgians that means travelling to warmer places. Will you travel by car to France, Italy or Spain this year? Here you will find a checklist of the things that you are required to take with you.

Obligations as a result of corona

This summer it is better you throw in a mouth mask in your suitcase. Wearing a mask is mandatory in many places in France, Italy and Spain - such as museums, supermarkets, souvenir shops, shopping malls and restaurants.

The coronary measures also affect your travel assistance. Do you have travel and road assistance from Touring via Cardoen and is your departure date approaching?  Then read the frequently asked questions on Touring.be in Dutch or French. Before departure, be sure to check the colour codes on https://diplomatie.belgium.be/en.

Warning triangle

Whilst travelling in France, Italy and Spain you must have a warning triangle in your trunk. In France, however, you may only place the warning triangle if it will not cause further danger. This means it is forbidden to place a warning triangle on the highway.

High visibility vests

In all three countries, the driver and passengers must wear a high visibility vest in case of a breakdown or accident. It is a requirement in only France and Italy to carry a safety vest in the car, but because of the obligation to wear a safety vest during emergencies, we recommend that every passenger carries a safety vest in their car.

Spare wheel or repair kit

It is mandatory to carry a spare wheel or repair kit in Spain, unless you have run-flat tires. Meanwhile, in France it is forbidden to drive with a damaged tyre and this will be fined. In any case, a spare wheel or repair kit is a good idea.

Documents

If you go to France, Italy or Spain, make sure to take some important documents with you. In France, a handful of cities have introduced an environmental zone. If you plan to drive around in one of these cities, make sure you buy an eco-vignette. This vignette indicates how eco friendly your car is, which can be a mandatory requirement in the centre of some cities. Italy also has similar low-emission zones where you will need a special permit.

Of course, you need to have your passport, driver's license and insurance certificate with you at all times. After all, an accident can happen very quickly. Under the motto, "be prepared for everything" you should also apply for your European health insurance card at your health insurance fund before your departure. When you are admitted to a hospital, it proves that you are in order with your health insurance.
